A Slice of Life July 2025

There was a time this post would have been full of flower pictures, but sometimes there are other distractions to capture my attention... starting with Sophie.  She'll be two years old in August and has grown into a sturdy and very fluffy girl.  She was good enough to stop and let me take her picture, but she definitely had adventure on her mind at the time.

The picture below was actually taken in June.  Town turkeys, geez.  Ordinarily they're only here in the fall.  They don't bother me so much and, heck, I think all babies are cute.

The young buck in velvet, below, caught my eye through the window, so I went out with my camera thinking my photo efforts would be a gentle way to shoo him from the garden.  It worked, but he lingered in the woods for a while.  He's probably been visiting here since he was a fawn.

Pictured below, Sophie is beckoning me to her favorite place of sticks and loam and the scent of critters who've passed along the trails.  She's at the head of the path right behind our garden shed, leading to the network of trails I cut years ago.  Just like Wally and LuLu before her, Sophie has the run of the place with or without my supervision.  She's a good girl and knows her boundaries.  She doesn't stay down there long without checking in, and she comes running gleefully when she's called.

The fawn below is standing at the very same spot in which Sophie was pictured.  A doe and two fawns were lounging alongside our shed, and the buck was munching on native foliage nearby, probably part of the same family.  This fawn is robust and healthy, but just as I took this picture another smaller, paler fawn stood up and wobbled weakly into the woods.

I was and still am very worried about the weakling fawn, and fear I may find another casualty in the woods this year.  I waited a while and then ventured quietly down the path.  Just a few steps in I found the family resting once again.  The weak fawn is laying down, the healthy fawn is standing the other side of Mom.  You can see its two back legs in their knock-kneed stance just beyond her.

Finally, Sophie is now at the front end of the yard in the cool shade of the cherry tree where she loves to roll in the emerald lawn and chew on the sticks she brings up from the woods.

The past two summers I let the garden go.  I was grief stricken the summer of 2023, then the summer of 2024 Rich was very sick and I spent all my time as a caregiver and chief cook and bottle washer.  Over the last 5 years we've lost 4 trees, changing the look of the garden significantly.  The deer were already eating everything in sight anyway, so I threw up my hands.  This spring the whole front of the yard and half of the side were torn up for sewer line replacement.  It's never ending.  However, once the landscapers finished the huge job of putting our yard back together I decided I missed my garden and now I've started over.  Hence the back and foot pain, sigh.

It will never be the same, but a person has to just keep going forward with hope... and lots of deer spray and altered expectations.

Have a beautiful day!

What lovely photos of Sophie! She has grown into a beautiful lady for sure. I too have pretty much given up on gardening and mostly just mow each week. Not a lot of flowers anymore and up close to the house and the water hose so I don't have to carry water. Getting old sometimes is a struggle!

What a lovely post, Leslie. Sophie is a beauty - so much floof! We all have to change our expectations to adapt to the life we are living, don't we. Big hugs - you are doing great, Jo x

I love all your golden and garden photos and so sweet to see the deer family. I hope that little one gets strong enough to grow into an adult. Sweet photos of Sophie. Good luck with redoing the gardens.

Thank you for sharing these wonderful pictures. What an amazing place to live and Sophie is such a special dog. I am glad she is so good and comes when she is called. Gardens always evolve with each passing year and I am sure the lower levels of management in recent years will be encouraging the wildlife, which is excellent to see. Those woods look so inviting especially on a hot day xx

Leslie, I just love it when you share your beautiful surroundings with all of us! Sophie gets more beautiful with every photo and I'm in awe of your deer - I've not ever seen one with that dark patch on its forehead and it looks as if the fawn has the beginnings of one, too!
We loved all the turkeys that brought their littles to visit at our former home and often found a few of them in the bird bath!
Thanks, my friend! Whatever you decide to do will be the perfect!

Oh Leslie, I so love this post. Sophie is indeed a beautiful girl. I love her fluff too and I bet you find it all over the house. But that's part of loving our pets. These photos are amazing and your garden is still a sanctuary even if you had to let it go for awhile. I too, am a full time care giver for my husband Dale. He had 2 strokes in October 2024 and he's had so many other medical issues, it's hard to keep up. My crafting days are few now, but I still try hard to get there. Those days keep us sane and my dining room table has now become a place to not only eat meals, but craft and blog when I can. We get deer, fawn and other wildlife in our garden too (I call it the back 40) and it's pretty wild in there. Things grow on their own and each year it seems I discover a new wildflower or bush that I didn't know I had. It's nice to see. I keep the grass mowed and my side flower garden is pretty good, but I no longer get to garden as much. Back hurts, feet hurt, neck hurt and at 75, I'm just too old to do a lot. I do what I can. And a young kid mows my grass. I still get to enjoy the greenery and flowers I plant in front in pots though. Thanks for sharing your beautiful life with us. Hugs!

Leslie, I so enjoy your posts and photos. They take me away from my daily issues and take me to a quiet, beautiful place of wonder in nature. Thank you for sharing your photos, family and life.

I love reading your blog that gives so much information as you craft and come up with your ideas. You let us into your life and I feel like you are speaking to a good friend. This post shows us your wonderful yard and lush forest just our of your windows. The animals that visit are calm and look like they belong there. Makes me want to take a deep breath. It was just what I needed after a week of dealing with back muscle spasms and muscle relaxers. I was so loopy, until I changed the amount and frequency. Much better now, but need to apologize for the lack of comments. When you comment on my cards, you are the wind beneath my crafty wings. Thanks my good friend. Have a wonderful day!

Isn't God a wonder! Thanks for sharing these photos of his amazing creations, Leslie. Miss Sophie looks so fluffy and pretty. Hard to believe she's two already. I'm sure your gardens will be beautiful no matter what you decide to do with them!

What beautiful photos and Sophie is downright gorgeous, I can't believe how big she has gotten and how much she has changed.
Your critters and greenery look wonderful, don't you just love nature? I can relate to the gardens being let go, mine were pretty much neglected for 19 years until we sold our lake home, but I am trying my best to get it in shape, but heat, humidity and old age sure has slowed me down. I spent the day in bed Wednesday with a vertigo attack, all day wasted, not sure what brought it on but I had been cleaning out my bottom kitchen cupboards the day before so maybe all the up and down got me, who knows? Anyhow thanks for sharing all that beauty with us, I love it!

AMAZING photos, Leslie. Thanks for sharing with all of us ... it's been very uplifting!! Sophie is so grown up and she is beautiful and strong. I hope that the weak fawn turns out the same. What a worry for that family and you are so generous to watch over them. I admire your energy to get back into the garden. I gave mine up seven years ago when I injured my right knee and can no longer bend down or get onto the ground. I miss it. Seeing your card makes me happy. It's so lovely and evident that it is loved by you and Rich and well looked after. xx

Absolutely BEAUTIFUL post Leslie! Sophie is such a lovely girl and always looks so happy in your photos...you can tell she is well loved! (give her a hug from me!!) I hope no casualties are found in your gardens this year and will hope for the best for the sweet little fawn. I know they can be destructive in gardens, but gosh they are so pretty!! Best of luck with your garden (and knees and back) replanting too...I'm sure it will be beautiful down the road! Thanks for sharing Sophie and a bit of your yard with us all...very much appreciated!! Hugs. :0)

Sophie has always been a beauty and continues on that path. I'm impressed that she is so well behaved too. Your wildlife is amazing and even more amazing that you were able to get such wonderful photos. Gardening isn't my favorite chore and I have the pain to prove it. But I do love to look outside and see the trees and flowers here and there. The lushness of your garden shows all the rain that you get. So pretty!

What an amazing post with your beautiful Sophie book ending the wildlife in your back yard. I enjoyed reading about your landscape and critters. Glad your gardens are being put back together so you can enjoy them again. I too, had a mama and her two fawn come into my yard while I was out weeding the vegetable garden. I got three amazing videos of their visit with me. One of the fawns was quite curious about me and approached me, coming within 8 feet of me. She / he was not frightened at all, just wanted to play I guess. Anyway, I loved today's post and also wanted to thank you for the lovely birthday card. You know the way to my heart, with your beautiful vintage style card. Take care my friend and enjoy the rest of your summer season.

Sophie is such a pretty girl, I thought I had a lot of combing with my cats she looks like she would be quite the job of combing :)
Those baby turkeys are so cute. When my brother was alive and we would go visit we always saw turkeys but I never saw the babies. I sure hope that little fawn can make it, although that would be one more thing trying to eat your garden.
I follow a guy from England that is an over 50's physio guy and he had a whole youtube on taking care while gardening.
Glad you are giving the garden another go and will be able to enjoy it, as much as you enjoy your little girl there. Take care!

I so enjoy looking forward to seeing your pictures of Sophie and your garden filled with wildlife! Hard to believe that she is 2 years old. Jennifer and her Mom feed the deer and they have so many groups scrolling through their yard especially this time of year with the adorable fawns. Daisy loves to sit and watch them. Thanks for sharing.

wonderful photos and stories to go with them, Leslie. We had more wild life back in Maryland. But here we have lots of robins, a few bunnies and some squirrels. Life is all about meeting those inevitable changes head on.

Wow Sophie has grown into such a beautiful dog, Tika will be 9 in August ♥
The wild life is spectacular, most of ours is in the mountains although we have had a few owls this summer xx

Sophie has grown into such a beautiful member of the family ... I'm so glad you have her by your side. Beautiful grounds & photographs. With being gone most of June then sick more then half of July, I never did get my pots planted this year and the weeds took over while we were away so I 'feel your pain' when it comes to our gardens. Now for the past couple weeks AT&T decided to put fiber optics through our development and they've made a total mess of my front yard. They came today and put down grass seed/straw but do you think they would level the heaps of dirt and fill in the tire track holes they made? NOPE ... just throw the seed and call the job done! UGH ... you know what I'll be doing this fall/next spring ... what a mess!! Hugs to you my friend ... sorry it's been so long since I've come to pay you a proper visit! I'm enjoying each & every post!!

Glad to see this lovely post with Sophie and the deer, turkeys. I understand about sometimes letting things go (like the garden) as I've done the same myself. Keep on doing what you can. Also if you want you can check out my turkey photos: https://wishesdreamsandotherthings.blogspot.com/2025/08/more-surprise-visitors.html
